A normal weight bird will have a breast bone that is slightly prominent.

A thin bird has a breastbone that feels like a raised knife blade under the skin, a definite ridge pointing out higher than the flesh either side.

A fat bird has an indentation instead of this ridge as he/she has layers of fat either side of the breastbone.

A bird regularly given the opportunity to free fly often also has an effect on the way this bone shows/feels,each side of the breastbone is a layer of muscles that are used in flight,a bird who flys very little can loose this muscle definition, hence seem thinner

Its always a good idea to weigh your bird. That way you can easily keep an eye on his weight. Mine are weighed regularly - I just use digital kitchen scales. It gave me a clue that Harry was being a bit of a piggy!
