Black headed caique dilema

Recommended Posts

having recently lost my BHC cock Im left with the dilema - do I try and find a new cock to pair with my hen or do I search for a new pair.

Ive found a 10 year old semi tame cage bird but feel he wont settle in to aviary life. Any help would be much appreciated. Dom

Why not get her a new husband? There must be a lone cock somewhere? Has she been a good breeder for you? If so that could be a better bet than buying a pair about which you have no knowledge. Sellers have been known to be 'economical' with the facts.

caiques are notorious for being bullies to there wives.....a strange cock bird may cause problems for the hen you already have and if the new male doesnt like the hen there will be violence

I have to disagree with Vikky...introduced correctly there shouldnt be a problem.....I would look for a Male.....or you could offer to take a Male on breeding loan or offer your Hen the same....didnt Caligula have an odd Male?

Good luck

A couple of years ago introduced a new male BHC to an established hen with no problems atall. In fact they were breeding within a few monthes. Same with YTC an adult male to a young hen and they bred the following season. I think Caiques like company so introduced sensibly all should hopefully go well.

we have recently introduced a new cock to one of our quite dominant hens and all is fine . we spent a long time with them in close proximaty to each other and then slowely placed the cages together until we found a right time to put them together .I feel this process should not be rushed !

The most difficult aspect of breeding is finding birds compatible with one another. Caiques, particularly the black-headed caiques, can be very aggressive toward each other, and if you carelessly place them together they may fight ferociously even to the point of one killing the other. The best way to match up pairs is to allow them to mutually select each other.

its just when you read stuff like this on virtually every caique site you come across it makes you think?
