General advice wanted

Recommended Posts

Is there a certain age that an Orange Winged Amazon will start talking? Have just got Louis, third hand, I don't think very well socialised, in fact I don't think he has ever been out of his cage. I have been told he is around a year old, but again that is questionable.

Can anyone give me as much info as possible on this little beauty? He is taking food from my hand, but will not step up. Is not talking and seems to like the security of his small cage (new very large one coming this weekend).

Have searched a lot on the internet since his arrival, but after talking to a chap at The Parrot Sanctuary near Skegness, I am getting mixed information. HELP!!!!

At a year old your bird is still very young and OW's are lovely birds.

Some birds never speak but prefer to whistle or copy noises.

I do know it is never too late to learn new words if they want to - As an example my 47 year old Amazon learned to say Jo-Jo last year even though she had never heard that name before coming to me 2 years ago and she is not a great talker (Only about 4 words/phrases).

As to taming and training, have a read of these? ...

The reason you may be getting conflicting advice is that there is never just one way to do anything with parrots .... their level of intelligence means each has their own character, are as different as humans are to each other.

This means what works for one may not be the best way forward with another BUT some things are always true ... that time and patience combined with love and care really do eventually work 100% of the time even if no results are seen quickly

Thats what I thought too. I am sure I read somewhere that an OW gets an orange ring around the eyeball between the age of 2 & 3. Louis has that already, so maybe he is older? I really don't know much about him. Have been trying to find out, but it's a bit like trying to get blood out of a stone!
