Feather condition

Recommended Posts

Guest choccyb

Wondered if anyone could help me, Chip (OW amazon) is apparently about 8/9 months old and I have had her with me now for a couple of weeks. I am a little worried about her feather condition and wondered whether this was normal in young parrots? Her feathers are so scruffy particularly her tail which looks bedraggled. When do they normally have their first molt and should she look this scruffy? Any help/advice welcome. :?

This is perfectly normal as young birds do seem to wear their feathers out.

My 8 month old Festive Amazon has really tatty feathers and her tail ones are broken, bent and missing bits.

Moulting will bring fresh new brightly coloured ones and here's the supplement I always use once a bird starts to moult/lose feathers:

Thanks for that, it is a relief to know that it is normal for her to look like a scruff bag. Will have a read up later. Not tried to give her a bath/spray let as letting her settle in properly and get used to us and her surroundings. May give it a go in a few days just a quick spray see how she reacts. Not sure if the previous owners did spray her or not. Have a sneaky suspicion as to the real reason they rehomed her now that she is settling more. Her "voive" is coming through very loud!!!!!!! She likes to make you know she is here and can get extrememly loud at periods thoughout the day. Doesnt bother me but I live in a semi so have yet to ask the neighbours if she is coming through loud and clear into their front room!!!! Either that was the reason they couldnt cope with her or she is just being loud due to missing having another bird as company.
