The Parrot Society

A recognised Charity, was founded in November 1966 and from an initial membership of some 250 has grown steadily to its present international membership of over 6000.

Its aims are the study and conservation of all parrots and parrotlike birds other than the domestic budgerigar. The magazine is published monthly and is sent to all paid up members, and is of interest to the beginner and more expert alike. Members are entitled to free, non-trade advertising in the magazine for wants, sales and exchanges of parrots; Council members and Officers are elected by ballot and are responsible for the proper running of the Society.

The Parrot Society is eager to help the beginner and has published five booklets on Australian Parrakeets, Cockatoos and Parrots, African Greys, plus Cockatiel and Lovebird Mutations to assist anyone keeping these birds (other titles will be published from time to time). Books, Society publications and promotional items are available from the PS office. Members are expected to act with a gentlemanly code of conduct in their dealings with other members. NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR AVICULTURE

The National Council for Aviculture represents the interest of all bird keepers at local, national and European levels. Locally, we are in contact with Environmental Health Officers and Trading Standards' Officers, both of whom have responsibility for matters that can and do affect bird keeping.

We regularly meet with, and make representation to, both the British Government through MAFF (now DEFRA), DOE. These departments have responsibility for all licensing, animal welfare and even pet shops and it is imperative that your voice is heard and your interests represented. We also correspond regularly with various EU Parliament and Commission sources who are often instrumental in forming laws which will affect your hobby.
We now also sit on a Contact Group of "PAW" (Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Crime).

The NCA has a Insurance scheme for Societies which covers for Public Liability, Trophies for Fire and Theft, Staging for Fire and Theft,
and cover for Birds while at shows. It now has a special insurance for members for loss of birds.

The NCA has set up a course called 'Introduction to Aviary Management' and is very successful in London and could be introduced
at other Skill or Educational Centres throughout the UK or any other organisation. Contact the Administrator.

The NCA is working in conjunction with a company called Smartwater which produce a invisible paint which you can put on your birds and will only show up under ultra-violet light; the bottle of solution is registered to you and, if your birds are stolen, can prove in court that the birds belong to you. It has been on demonstration at the National by the NCA together with the company. The only way you can obtain the product is by being a Member or Society Affiliated to the NCA. I have a bottle of the solution on trial and the price is approx. £150 for a 50ml bottle which will cover about 100 birds. Are your birds worth £1.50 each and worth protecting from thieves?

If your Society want to know how the NCA operates I do travel around the country giving lectures which incorporates the NCA, General Talk on Birds, and a Slide Show. As far as costs go all that is charged is for fuel (within a reasonable distance).

The NCA IS the voice of aviculture and takes care of all those matters which affect your hobby. We need the support of every aviculturist and society in the UK if we are to protect you.

It runs a CLUB OF THE YEAR competition sponsored by Cage & Aviary Magazine, and there is money on offer so ask your club or society secretary first, is the club or society affiliated to the N.C.A? if not get them to affiliate, and enter the competition.

SCA - THE SOCIETY FOR CONSERVATION IN AVICULTURE

What is the SCA?
The Society was formed in 1993, when a need became apparent to start to conserve avian species before they were lost forever. The Society aims to promote and develop all species and varieties of birds kept by aviculturists, with special regard being paid to threatened and endangered species, both in the wild, and domesticated.

With ever increasing demands placed upon the Earth, some species of birds are becoming increasingly 'at risk'. Action must be taken now to ensure that aviculture is able to play its part in the conservation of such spcies. Everyone can contribute in some way to this.

The Society strongly discourages deliberate acts of hybridisation to supply the pet trade with exotic crossbreeds, and is very much opposed to the commercial importation of wild caught birds.

It is envisaged that a quarantine centre will be built, enabling members to import captive bred only birds to support their breeding programs. The Society endeavours to act as a totally, confidential third party, so breeders can contact others when seeking a specific bird for their aviary. However, all member's personal details are totally confidential, so The Society will only disclose a name and telephone number to a third party, if given prior consent. NB. We will not ever forward an address under any circumstances.

Our prime concern is at all times, for the future survival and welfare of all avian species, and especially for those birds placed into the care of The Society. It is also intended that a more active role will be taken in promoting responsible pet ownership and care, with particular regard to parrots.

Help and Advice Lines
The Society has many experienced members in all forms of aviculture. Advice on care, breeding, conservation, pet behavioural problems, etc. is available to all members via a simple 'phone call. The SCA also has contacts with many Governing Bodies and Specialist Societies, if a member should require information of a more specific nature. We are also able to advise on The Department of Environment CITES regulations. The Society also has available a series of care leaflets on specific types of birds.

Resuced and Donated Birds
The SCA provides shelter and care for rescued and donated birds at the Holding Station, where birds are normally taken for assessment, prior to placement in a member's breeding program. Where a bird is suitable to be placed as a pet, long term foster homes are sought. Please note however, that these pet birds are frequently either very old, or incapacitated in some way. A donation to The Society is expected in respect of any placement to a member, to help with the running costs of the Holding Station.

All birds remain the property of the Society at all times, and may not be sold, or passed onto a third party. Membership of the Society has to be maintained, or the bird must be returned forthwith.

Who should join?
Absolutely anyone who has a concern for the future conservation and welfare of birds. Pet owners, or those due to circumstances, that do not keep a bird, are just as welcome as the serious aviculturist. A magazine full of information is regularly distributed to members and the SCA attends most of the major shows.
