HM Customs

As far as I understand the situation, anyone in possession of birds seized by HM Customs is not allowed to sell them as they remain the property of HM Customs. If you try to sell them via this site you will be permanently banned.

Please note that this is a free service for private breeders. Any dealers found advertising on this page will be removed.

Hand-reared birds: clarification

Following recent enquiries I would like to explain why I do not place adverts for hand-reared parrot babies.

Firstly, the number of adverts needing space would at least double. Secondly I was originally concerned about the origin and quality of many of these birds.

If you are a genuine breeder and wish to announce the fact then you can go onto the BREEDERS' DIRECTORY (created by Parrot-Link and often poorly imitated!)

I apologise to those of you who are hindered by this position but I can assure you that it does not reflect any bias against hand-rearing.

Having said that, if you submit an advert which reads something like 'Grey cock, proven, £200, hen died egg-bound, 14 chicks last year', I can assure you that I will delete it!

I am advised that dealers may be using this page - if you spot one please let me know. Thanks.

Ads are free and can be placed by going to the Forum. It can help response to put in your area & phone number & help us if you include your typed email address. We do not accept advertisements for unweaned chicks - sales or wanted!

Free Parrots!

I get a certain number of messages requesting free, or cheap parrots. Some are along the lines of "Disabled person without much money..." None of these is put onto the site. It is possible that some are genuine however I cannot tell so I ignore them. I also have a deep scepticism regarding the many 'Rescue' organisations currently running in the UK so cannot honestly recommend any. Even the UK Parrot Society seems confused; they have a 'Rehoming' section in the magazine but the birds are for sale, not simply being donated to good homes.

I even had a case of the RSPCA 'charging' for an Orange-winged Amazon (they said it was for the cage).

It may sound harsh but the simple truth is that if you want a specific parrot and cannot afford it then you have four choices: save money, borrow/raise money, buy a cheaper parrot or try your luck at the 'Rescues'.

Parrots cost money to buy, house and feed. Breeders sell surplus offspring at current market rates in order to recoup the continuous outlay.

Wing-clipping

Parrot Link would like to ask breeders NOT to clip the wings of baby parrots before sale - it is a very cruel practice; it can stop the growth of new feathers permanently and compromise maturity of chest muscles (more...)

Proven Pairs

For those of you inexperienced in buying Parrots, I would point out that a "proven" pair of birds, in my opinion, should not only have produced fertile eggs, but should have hatched them and at least partially reared the young. Although I would like to assume that the majority of the adverts below are from genuine people, it is sometimes the case that pairs of birds, especially Greys, who have had their eggs removed for several years are sold as "proven" when they, understandably, get fed up with this awful treatment and stop laying.

First-time Buyers

If you are buying a Parrot for the first time, please be aware that it involves a great deal of commitment over a long period. There is no guarantee that any particular Parrot will be a good talker and even "cuddly tame" birds can bite. If you are thinking of a baby that may need an occasional hand feed while it settles in, make sure that you can do this BEFORE you buy.

Parrot link was set up to help genuine breeders, ie those who keep birds primarily because they are interested in them, selling a few babies each year to cover the cost. We are not here to support those who seem to be selling half their collection every week, or commercial Parrot farmers.
